Open-Source Market Model Innovation Project
July 15, 2025An open-source modelling initiative to support a transparent, collaborative, and data-driven transition to a net-zero energy system

In partnership with the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we are contributing to the transformation of the energy sector through the Open-Source Market Model project, funded by the Network Innovation Allowance (NIA). This project aims to create an affordable and accessible tool and project database for analysing energy systems, using open-source software and open data only. This method encourages transparency, inclusivity, and broader engagement with stakeholders.
The project includes assessing suitable open-source models, assessing potential risks and opportunities in using open-source and open data, replicating the results from NESO’s existing commercial tool, and building an advanced open-source market model that reflects real-world energy demands, renewable supply potential, and infrastructure. It also ensures transparency, accessibility, and addresses any associated security concerns.
By adopting trusted tools like PyPSA-Eur, the project aims to enable government, industry, and academia to engage with and contribute to energy system modeling. This collaborative, open-source approach strengthens model credibility, democratizes access, and ultimately supports the UK’s long-term energy transition and climate goals.
