Be the change! Less than 5% of active open-source energy planning tool maintainers are women (IRENA). That is a technical capability gap we can do something about.

We are launching WIEOS, a training and mentorship programme in open energy modelling for African women, starting in February 2027 and running for 24 weeks. Free and online. A great way to progress in your career in energy.

Why does this matter? The people building the tools we use to plan our energy systems influence the questions we ask, the assumptions we make, and ultimately the solutions we build. If those teams do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, important perspectives on energy needs and access can be missed.

The mentorship programme is open for women who want to be the change and contribute to open energy modelling while strengthening their career. It consists of lectures, peer pods, hackathon, and mentoring. All on a part-time basis.

The first cohort is for African women. You can join through one of three pathways:

🔧 The Engineer: energy modellers contributing to software tools
🗺️ The Builder: geospatial data and technical contributions
💡 The Explorer: low-code contributions to open energy modelling

Organisations can support WIEOS by contributing mentors, internships, or open energy projects that participants can learn from.
