A collaborative initiative to enhance PyPSA as an industry-grade tool for energy system planning

PyPSA-TaskForce

The PyPSA-Taskforce is a joint effort by Technische Universität Berlin, Università di Pisa, and Open Energy Transition to enhance PyPSA as a transparent, industry-grade tool for energy system planning.

Focusing on closing key functionality gaps, such as investment optimization and advanced operational modeling, the initiative supports real-world applications across policy, industry, and research. By advancing core capabilities through open collaboration, the Taskforce strengthens PyPSA’s role in enabling accessible and reproducible energy planning. At the same time, it actively positions PyPSA as a stable, transparent, and credible alternative to proprietary tools, reducing reliance on black-box models and lowering barriers to high-quality energy system analysis. Through this effort, the Taskforce also builds confidence among industry, policymakers, and researchers in adopting open-source solutions, strengthening PyPSA beyond the capabilities of existing proprietary models.

The Taskforce demonstrates how open collaboration can deliver high-quality, industry-relevant tools without the limitations of proprietary software. It enables organizations to benefit from greater transparency, flexibility, and cost efficiency, while actively shaping the development of a tool tailored to their needs. Participants gain direct influence over the evolution of PyPSA and access to a growing ecosystem of expertise and innovation.

The project will increase the quality of all current and future uses of the PyPSA framework and its models, supporting more robust and transparent energy planning worldwide. By reducing dependence on proprietary tools and promoting open standards, it contributes to more inclusive and trustworthy decision-making in the energy transition.
