MapYourGrid
January 1, 2025Empowering individuals, communities and nations around the world to map the electrical grid with open data with Datactivist, Jungle Bus, dynartio, and Infrageomatics

Partners: Datactivist, Dynartio, Jungle Bus, and Infrageomatics
Funder: Breakthrough Energy
Electric grids around the world need increasing development to accelerate the clean energy transition. MapYourGrid is an open-source, community-driven initiative that aims to make the world's electricity transmission network fully and accurately available in OpenStreetMap (OSM) through collaborative mapping, enabling planners, researchers, and local communities to design a faster energy transition.
Launched in 2025 by Open Energy Transition in partnership with data-for-good specialists Datactivist, Dynartio, Jungle Bus, and Infrageomatics, the initiative provides tools, training, and support to crowdsource mapping of power lines, towers, substations, and plants worldwide. Reliable grid data is essential for energy planning and investment, serving academia, institutions, local authorities, and private organizations globally.
Open models like PyPSA-Earth also depend on open data, and machine learning alone cannot fill existing data gaps. A community-driven approach delivers superior results, particularly in regions where data is scarce. The MapYourGrid Initiative and its community aim to expand global coverage of high-voltage transmission grids in OpenStreetMap from approximately 70% to 98% over the next three years by providing the tools, training, and data stewardship needed to map this vital infrastructure. By making transmission networks visible everywhere, this initiative enables fairer, faster energy transitions and electrification, empowering local communities, guiding research, and accelerating climate action.
Future work will focus on quality assessment and improvements to ensure high-quality in data.
