AVANGUARD
June 1, 2026Advanced data-driven strategies for optimized long-duration energy storage (LDES) deployment in multi-energy networks

AVANGUARD addresses one of the EU energy transition’s biggest bottlenecks: how to deploy long-duration energy storage effectively across power systems with high renewable penetration. The project responds to the fact that batteries alone cannot solve multi-day variability, congestion, and sector-coupling needs in future grids.
It develops the first fully free, open-source, Python-based tool suite for assessing and optimizing long-duration energy storage across planning, network operation, market participation, and revenue stacking. The project is validated through four cross-regional use cases in Spain-Portugal, Croatia, Denmark-Sweden, and Italy, using both data-rich and data-scarce conditions.
The AVANGUARD platform combines a shared Data Hub, interoperable modelling tools, and stakeholder-facing visualization in one integrated workflow. This makes it attractive to grid operators, planners, technology developers, policymakers, and investors who need transparent, replicable, and bankable decision support for storage deployment.
By improving storage siting, sizing, dispatch, and business models, AVANGUARD aims to reduce curtailment, improve grid flexibility, support renewable integration, and strengthen EU energy security. Its open-source and data-sharing approach is designed to accelerate replication, policy uptake, and long-term market adoption across Europe.
